So, many of you know of Thom McInally. Or, if not, look at the banner above you. Thats his work, hes our resident graphic designer, and also one of my very good friends. Amazing fingerboarder as well. Just want to say congratulations to him, and to share with you a small story.
He had a university interview today. They're quite nerve racking, without the added fear of trying something completely different to what most people would do. He's going for graphic design, and the interviewer asked if he'd done any design work outside of what he'd done on his course at college. Thom showed the guy the unite 'fingerboarding is awesome' tshirt (I came up with the idea, thom made it a reality with his graphic work) and the unite x redemption decks.
Needless to say, the guy was impressed, but, like most people, didn't know anything about fingerboarding. He shouted to the other people waiting for interviews "Does anyone know what fingerboarding is?! I've never heard of it before." Someone replied "Yeah, it's err.. tech decks". Thom had his setup at hand, and passed it to the guy. "What do I do with it? Give me a demonstration." Thom busted some sick tricks, kickflips, bigspins, and everyone in the room went silent. Another student went "Woah.". Then the interviewer shouted "You're right this is FUCKING AWESOME."
And so Thom got the place at university.
Firstly, congratulations Thom! Well deserved man. Secondly.. what an inspiring story for being yourself? You might think people think fingerboarding is just a dumb toy, but aside idiotic twats in secondary school who hate everything they don't understand and lash out with violence because they're really stupid and know no better; if you show someone fingerboarding for what it really is, they'll most likely be really impressed, and want to know more. Showing you can not only do something you like, but are proud to do it regardless of what people might think of you, will show volumes towards your character for your entire life.
Fingerboarding got someone a place at uni! As the interviewer said, quite rightly, fingerboarding IS awesome :)
