Capital Grip Review

I got this tape free to review from the owner of Capital, which was really rad of him. I'd never properly used griptape before, and having now used this for a fair while, here's my review! To review it I set it up on a Woodguest new shape deck with ytrucks x3s and winkler wheels. First though, some pictures.

Shipping
on this was around a week, which is pretty considering it came from out of the UK. nicely packaged in a bubble mailer, and it arrived in perfect condition. 10/10

First impressions
of this were great, I was soo stoked by all the colours that you got, and how professional the tape looked with the packaging! its simple, just a little paper insert in a bubble mailer, but at the same time it looks really rad and helps to bring on the oldschool vibe that this company is trying to create. 10/10

Performance
of this grip is really good. When it came to setting it up, it was really easy to cut using scisors and a small sharp kitchen knife. Obviously you cant just file it down like riptape, but it wasn't hard to cut, and having never done a grip job before I managed to make a really fun yet simple design in a matter of minutes. The grip is proper high quality skateboard griptape, so its got the little tiny holes that stop air bubbles appearing, which means its even easier to apply to a deck without problems. I was really surprised at how clean the edges came out, even with just a small knife and scisors. Also, the holes for the truck screws were really easy to pop out using a tool, and they let the screws fit perfectly flush into the deck.

On to actually using the grip, the performance really blew me away at first. I was expecting it to be cold and dull to use like tech deck grip, but this stuff is really grippy and actually works really well. It gives you a ton of board feel, really nice control, doesn't get sweaty with use like some tapes, and doesn't hurt your hands either. Maybe after a long sesh using these (a few hours or so) you might feel a bit weird on the ends of your fingers, but its not the bloody painful mess a lot of people depict griptape useage to be. And honestly, after using it for a short while I think you'd stop noticing any negative feeling from use. The most surprising this was how it didn't feel cold, or unresponsive. Somehow it gave me great control and made all my tricks suck up to my fingers as if I was using riptape or something. High ollies were just as easy, infact this made catching tricks maybe a teeny bit easier than riptape on some occasions. 9/10

Overall this stuff is really nice, just perhaps a little bit too harsh on the fingers for my taste. Whilst it doesn't so much as hurt, and I'm sure with a few weeks of getting used to it every day, it wouldn't be noticeable, right now it bothers me. A super fun tape, and an experience everyone who's not tried griptape should try at least once. Its a very close call, a lot closer than I was imagining, but I don't think overall its going to stop me using riptape on my main setups. However I have an oldschool and I really want some of this on it! Which leads me to my final point - there's only one black sheet. I think black is the most common colour grip, and other colours some people just use to make designs, which doesn't take a whole sheet. So maybe 3 black and then some coloured sheet, or offering a black tape pack, would be a good idea and get more people stoked on the idea of using grip. Its really rad Capital are trying to take things back to the roots of fingerboarding, and in a fun way, so props to them. You could do worse to pick some up, especially for the price of only 5 dollars! 9/10
